Welcome to GrantED

Stronger RELATIONSHIPS. Greater IMPACT.

GrantED is a joint project of Jewish Funders Network and UpStart that works to strengthen relationships between grantmakers and grantseekers in the Jewish community.

Grantmakers:

Foundation professionals, trustees, or individual donors involved in the process of allocating grants to nonprofit organizations in order to achieve positive outcomes and impacts for the Jewish community and the world.

Grantseekers:

Nonprofit leaders pursuing grant allocations to support activities that achieve positive outcomes and impact for the Jewish community and the world.

Jewish philosopher Martin Buber writes that there are two kinds of relationships: those rooted in the I-Thou and those rooted in the I-it. Much of the time, our relationships are I-it, in which we see others as objects we can use to accomplish our goals. When we do this, we stop being fully human and instead become defined by what we can do for each other, whether it’s providing funds or implementing a program.

In contrast, relationships rooted in the I-Thou, are about being in relationship with the person in front of us, seeing them in the fullness of their humanity. In I-Thou, we are partners in a mutually reciprocal relationship of seeing and being seen. Buber teaches us that as Jews we must strive for I-Thou relationships.

GrantED is about bringing grantmakers and grantseekers into I-Thou relationships, ones in which we recognize one another’s humanity and can share in the work of building a vibrant Jewish community.

GrantED creates and curates articles, tools, and other materials to inspire and inform grantmakers and grantseekers in the Jewish community. We organize these around four core interdependent components of successful grantmaking partnerships:

Sustaining Impact

Multi-year funding and other practices that ensure the sustainability of an organization and its work.

Relationship Building

Tools for establishing and maintaining trusting and respectful interpersonal relationships.

Communication

Avoiding assumptions, sharing feedback and expectations.

Power Dynamics

Making sure all voices are heard and that power is not abused.

GrantED also offers workshops, facilitated conversations and other programs. Sign up for our email list here to learn about upcoming events.
